Folks, This Ain't Normal
A self-described “Lunatic Farmer” Joel Salatin is a third generation alternative farmer who resides with four generations of family on their 550-acre farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Joel returned to the farm full-time in 1982 where he has pioneered many innovative practices for producing food in a way that works with nature, not against it.
The family’s farm, Polyface Inc. has been featured in countless media formats. It achieved iconic status as the grass farm featured in the New York Times bestseller "Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan and the award-winning film documentary, "Food Inc." In addition to farming, Joel is an accomplished writer and has authored eight books including Folks, This Ain’t Normal and Everything I want to do is Illegal. His speaking and writing reflect dirt-under-the-fingernails experience punctuated with mischievous humor. He passionately defends small farms, local food systems, and the right to opt out of the conventional food paradigm.
