Filmed throughout the world in Hawaii, Tahiti, Australia, Fiji, Mexico, Bali and Ireland, it features world champions Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater and Beau Young joining the new guard of Heath Joske, Harrison Roach, Ellis Ericson and Ace Buchan and Jon Jon Florence, alongside ‘soul surfers’ Fergal Smith, Joel & Kye Fitzgerald among many more.
Spirit of Akasha made its World Premiere at the Sydney Festival 2014 at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday 25 January, a venue with its own iconic association with presenting surfing films over the last 50 years. This exclusive screening in the Concert Hall was accompanied by live performances from The Windy Hills, Grouplove, Xavier Rudd, POND, Jack River and many more.
Morning of the Earth took a unique approach to music. For the first time, music was not treated as a background or incidental to the vision on the screen. The music was the narrator, with each track played in its entirety. The original soundtrack produced the Australian #1 single Open Up Your Heart and was the first Australian soundtrack to achieve gold sales. It was also recently included in the 100 Best Australian Albums.
The Spirit of Akasha soundtrack features mainly original songs composed and recorded by musicians with strong ties to the surfing community and includes a rare Brian Wilson recording. Other artists featured include Andrew Kidman, Atoms for Peace, Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT), Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Ben Howard, Xavier Rudd, Angus Stone, POND, Matt Corby, Dirty Three and many more.
As part of the project, a number of the musicians who composed and recorded songs for the soundtrack, joined some added artists to record a tribute album to the original Morning of the Earth soundtrack, entitled Reimagined, and makes the perfect companion piece to the brand new Spirit of Akasha soundtrack recording.
